Epitope tags provide a method to localize gene products in a variety of cell types, study the topology of proteins and protein complexes, identify associated proteins, and characterize newly identified, low abundance or poorly immunogenic proteins when protein specific antibodies are not available. GST (Glutathione S-transferase) is a 26kDa protein, present in eukaryotes and in pro-karyotes, where they catalyze a variety of reactions. Glutathione S-transferase is used to create the GST gene fusion system. This GST-fusion protein can then be purified from cells via its high affinity for glutathione. Fusion Proteins offer an important biological assay for direct protein-to-protein interactions. The GST gene fusion system has been introduced into numerous expression vectors.
